IPurpose

What a catechism is for

A catechism is a formal statement of what a church teaches, arranged as questions and answers so that it can be learned, recalled, and professed. The Global Methodist Church uses its catechism at the points where a person enters the full life of the church: confirmation after infant baptism, adult conversion and baptism, and reception of members from other traditions. When a whole congregation joins the denomination, its clergy lead the church through the same process.

The answers are drawn from the church's doctrinal standards. Holy Scripture is the primary rule and authority for faith, morals, and service. The Nicene Creed supplies the structure of the first section. The Articles of Religion and the Confession of Faith supply the second, together with the Wesleyan way of salvation set out in the Book of Doctrines and Discipline. Every answer on this site is quoted as the church wrote it, with the scripture references and doctrinal citations the catechism attaches to it.

Ecumenical Affirmations

The first section of the catechism deals with ecumenical affirmations, based in the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed is the primary organizing structure and source for the Ecumenical Affirmations.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.Nicene Creed

The second section of the catechism deals with Wesleyan Characteristics. The Articles of Religion and the Confession of Faith are the primary organizing structure and source, and the treatment of God's grace follows the Wesleyan way of salvation.
